Work Based Learning: Work Based Qualifications

SACCA has set up a Forum to investigate Work Based Learning, which will consider how best the future development of work baseproject side pictured learning qualfications can be supported in higher education institutions in Scotland. In particular, the Group will investigate good practice in work based learning qualifications and produce guidelines of this practice along with supporting case studies.

The work builds on the recommendations originally put forward in the ‘Garrick Report’, work done in the professions (such as Early Years and Social Care) and previous reports to SACCA, the most recent, Emerging models of work-based learning in Scottish higher education, has just been published.

The Forum has its own wiki where you will find documents, presentations and other resources.

Defining Work Based Learning

Work based learning in this context is defined as being "for work, through work and at work", that is:

"Work-based learning means learning closely bound to the work role and often, but not always, located in the workplace itself. An important aspect of work-based learning is that through the experience of performing the work role, complemented by other activities such as directed reading, researching and group work, it is possible for learners to achieve planned learning outcomes that can be evidenced and resourced" (from "The Standard for Childhood Practice", QAA and SSSC 2007, p 2)
